Early days in the area and a bit of history
The Treharris area was mostly farms until the arrival of the coal mine in the 1870’s, although there was a small village in Quakers Yard.
This part of the website will be based mainly on the businesses, religion, leisure amenities and people of our 6 communities under Treharris postal area, that is Treharris, Trelewis, Edwardsville, Bedlinog, Quakers Yard and Nelson. It will be done following my research using Kelly Directories of South Wales and Monmouth and other directories of South Wales in the early part of the twentieth century, plus visits to libraries and archives in our area. It is not a comprehensive piece of work but to the best of my ability I will try to be as accurate as possible based on the research I do. Hopefully, it will be a useful piece of information now and more so in the future.
Early in the last century Treharris was described as a large modern village and township, lit up by gas from the Quakers Yard gas works, with the church of St Mathias, built in 1896 at a cost of £3 ,500 on land gifted by Lord Lambourne, with seating for 365. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £286 in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff and held since 1912 by Rev James Thomas, formerly of Lampeter. The St Marys chapel of ease in nearby Trelewis, was built a decade earlier in 1886/87 at a cost of £1,100 and will seat 250 persons.
There are also several dissenting chapels in Treharris and a Police station in Edwards Street erected 1885 which has accommodation for 4 constables and a superintendent. There is also the Borough police station in Perrott street for a Sergeant and four constables.
The public hall and institute were built in 1892 at a cost of £3300 and has a gallery, stage, dressing rooms and cloak rooms. The building also includes a reading room, library, recreation and committee rooms, and a fine music hall. The library and reading rooms are supported by contributions from the local mineworkers and boast over 2,500 volumes.
The free library and reading rooms, presented by the late Andrew Carnegie esq. (died1919) were erected in Perrott street at a cost of £2,500. The building was built of red bricks with white stone dressings.
The Cemetery of 5 acres, owned by Merthyr Tydfil Cooperation in Beachcroft was opened in 1888 and boasts a small chapel.
The Colliery is almost the sole industry here and it is currently being worked by the Ocean Coal company Limited and is said to be the deepest in South Wales, being 765 yards in depth .Glyn Bargoed House , Trelewis is the residence of William Watkin Leigh esq. JP. The Royal is the commercial hotel. Lord Lambourne P.C. C.V.O. Alfred Thomas esq. Mrs Evans and Thomas Pritchard esq. are the chief landowners. The population at this date is 7,157 persons in Treharris.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century rows of houses started to be developed near the Quakers Yard station. In 1900 a new century began, and within a few years rows of houses started to appear and form the village of Edwardsville itself, this included several shops and two chapels, even so the railway station remained as Quakers Yard.
Bedlinog is an ecclesiastical parish formed by an order of council 28th June 1912, from the parish of St Mathias Treharris. The church of St Cadoc erected in 1912 at a cost of £3,000 is a building of blue pennant stone and consists of a Norman apsidal chancel with Nave and vestries, The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, held since 1916 by the Rev. David Davies, The population of Bedlinog in 1911 was 4,810
Llanfabon is one of our oldest districts and church registers are found as far back as 1694. Nelson developed around it and became a market town and home to three stations in its time. Nelson, which was opposite the Dynevor pub in the middle of the village, Llancaiach which was up behind the hand ball court and finally the last one Nelson and Llancaiach which closed in 1963. St Cynon on Fiddlers Elbow was also part of Llanfabon and a church of ease was also built there in 1863 for 200 persons and a further church of ease was then erected in High Street Nelson in 1888, St Johns church, at a cost of £1,700. In 1911 the population of Nelson and Llanfabon was 6,531.
Difficult times for everyone with World war one taking place 1914-1918 and a lot of young men lost their lives in the district
